For years, creatives have been lamenting the regurgitation in the story industry. I saw the same thing as a literary agent. Publishers wanted safe sales and clear projections. It is a business, after all. So in that regard, I get it. Often, the things outside the box were labeled “too risky.” Look at the classics we admire now—those authors were frequently told the same thing.

The point: keep going. Sometimes the reason you’re writing your book won’t be known until years later. Most writers are pioneers, and forging a new path is hard. You can focus too much on what the industry is doing. Be knowledgeable, yes, but when that knowledge starts to douse your fire, return to the work. Just be faithful to the story that came to you and see it through. Then try to cultivate enough faith that it will all make sense eventually.
